PSYC 257 Psychology of Gender (5) (D) "Explores major psychological theories of sex differences. Examines studies of sex-role development and biological and environmental influences that may determine and maintain sex differences in aggression, cognitive abilities, achievement, motivation, affiliation and sexuality."
I took this class in order to gain perspective on gender issues in our society. As a while male heterosexual I have experienced minimal discrimination and negativity in my life so this course was good in bringing up new perspectives I hadn't thought much about. Also, it focused on media and how they shape society's understanding and gender norms.
ESRM 321 Accounting and Finance from a Sustainablity Perspective (5) (Mi) "Introduction to business concepts relating to finance, accounting, and international business in the context of environmental resource management."
This class was good for learning how businesses view sustainability. There are certain ways to track a business's effect on the environment and other socially responsible practices, such as fair wages. We learned how to judge a business's sustainability practices based on their annual reports.
ESRM 325 Environmental Application of Plants: Bioenergy and Bioremediation (3) (Me) "Explores current topics in forest bioresources with an emphasis on bioenergy, remediation of pollutants, and carbon sequestration. The biggest environmental issue humankind faces today is climate change. This class will cover various treatments of air pollution."
This class was great for learning how to use plants in order to help in current environmental issues. Phytoremediation deals with utilizing certain plants and practices in cleaning the air, soil, and water. Also, using plants to produce cleaner burning fuels. Facing the issue of global warming now and into the future this class taught us what is currently being done to lessen our carbon footprint.
URBDP 480 Planning as a Profession (1) (Me) "Provides students interested in the planning profession an opportunity to understand the different pathways and career choices within the profession. Introduces students to guest professionals in various planning careers and highlight key issues, skills used, and tips to entering the field. Focuses on professional practice rather than analytical methods or theory."
This class may give me further insight into what I want to do as a career. Urban planning has many areas of interest one can become a subject matter expert in. I hope to gain some motivation and perspective in this class.
URBDP 404 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (3) (Me) "Provides students with introductory practical knowledge of Geographical Information Systems and Science for current and future coursework in urban planning."
This class gave us a working knowledge of GIS. Through weekly projects and assignments we learned the various tools and products that can be utilized. I learned the concepts behind how GIS works and how to use it in order to generate new data with digital mapping tools.
ESRM 431 Ecopsychology (5) (Mi) "Explores psychology of the human relationship with nature. Critically examines how ecopsychology can impact urban sustainability, human health, environmental education, and the design of new technologies. Specific topics include evolutionary psychology; human-animal interaction; biophillia; children and nature; indigenous cultures; and ecotherapy."
This will be a good class because it deals with peoples perceptions and dealings with nature. In trying to incorporate green practices in the urban environment it will be important to understand how people think about nature. I hope to gain a further understanding of what factors keep the public from pushing for better sustainability practices.
ESRM 250 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems in Forest Resources (5) (Mi) "Applications of GIS technology to forest science and management. Fundamentals of GIS systems: data sources, preprocessing, map analysis, output; remote sensing as a source of GIS data, image analysis, and classification. Emphasis on GIS as a source of management and technical information requests."
I hope to gain further understanding of the uses of GIS. As someone who is focusing on environmental design it will be beneficial to practice using GIS from a forest resource perspective.
ESRM 460 Power, Privilege, and Preservation (5) (Mi) "Critically examines strategies of resource managers to integrate local communities and cultures in protected areas management. Explores issues of power, privilege, and injustice and their impacts on individuals, society, and resource management decisions. Examines the potential for more socially just and ecologically sustainable approaches to protected areas management."
As the urban environment gets more populated it will be important to keep natural areas safe from human damage. This class will teach the factors that go into protecting these valuable natural areas. I hope to learn strategies and the reasoning behind protecting the natural environment in today's world.
ESRM 400 Natural Resource Conflict Management (3) (Me) "Introduction to the causes, dynamics, and consequences of natural resource conflicts as well as the range of procedural interventions used to manage conflict. Specific cases of environmental conflict and alternative dispute resolution procedures are examined. Emphasis on developing skills to effectively analyze, manage, and resolve natural resource conflicts."
Natural resource rights and protection are becoming key topics in today's world. I would like to learn about the different perspectives and struggles that are occuring. I think this class will help to build an understanding for who are the major players in environmental issues, what their interests are, and hopefully various ways to resolve these issues.
PUBPOL 403 Professional Leadership (4) (Me) "Cultivates practical skills required to lead within various organizational contexts: managerial strategies for public, nonprofit, and business organizations are developed through case studies and guest speakers. Focuses on analytical and ethical approaches to problem solving and the communication skills needed for effective leadership in any career."
ESRM 405 Growing Stuff: Ecology, Economy, and Culture of Resource-Production Ecosystems (5) (Mi) "Examines the connections between ecological, economic, and cultural aspects of local ecosystems that produce natural resources, through three case studies involving reading, writing, class discussion, and three required Saturday or weekend field trips. Case studies may include forest products, seafood, dairy products, biofuels, orchard crops, or others."
This class will tie together some key issues involved in sustainability. With some field work we will learn how to measure and evaluate some local environmental practices involving food production. I would like to take away knowledge of how the local economy and the sustainability movement interact, relate, and even conflict.

CEP 498 Special Topics (3) "Systematic study of specialized subject matter" which in this class is urban planning projects.
This class was taught by David Blum and was an urban planning practicum. Students work in groups and choose one specific real-life urban planning project to work on throughout the quarter where students collaborate solution(s), create info-graphics, and their present ideas to client(s). This gives some experience of on-the-job-training before graduation.
URBDP 450 Introduction to Land Use, Growth Management, and Environmental Planning (3) "Provides an understanding of contemporary land use issues (including sprawl, smart growth, new urbanism, transit-oriented development, and Washington's Growth Management Act) and examines their environmental impact and social welfare implications. Analyzes best-practice techniques of growth management."
URBDP 422 Urban and Regional Geospatial Analysis (5) Principles of GIS applied to problems in urban design and planning, landscape architecture, and environmental and resource studies. Practical problem-solving approaches using contemporary desktop mapping packages and vector and raster GIS systems. Siting, environmental evaluation and inventories, and modeling.
This is the second GIS class I took and it helped me to learn to apply more features of GIS and think about what types of maps are useful in the field of urban planning. GIS may be a very useful skill in my future career so this class teaches a hard skill that is sought by employers in both the public and private sectors.
