Abstract
The purpose of this Seattle green roof survey is to compare 2018 results to the initial survey results from 2009 in order to measure the progress made in green roof installation. The question is, how many more green roofs have been installed and how much green roof space (in square feet) exists in Seattle? Finding these answers will include reaching out to both public and private sector organizations who take part in the installation and permitting of green roofs in Seattle, sending out green roof surveys to be filled out, compiling survey results, organizing this data, and determining what progress has taken place since 2009. I anticipate that the number of green roofs has increased significantly due to the implementation of the Seattle Green Factor, in 2007, which incentivizes and requires green infrastructure in some Seattle zones. Also included in the survey will be a question about the developer’s motivation to install the green roof which will provide further insight into the choices made by developers. With this information, Seattle policy-makers and those involved in green infrastructure will have current data about green roof installation to measure Seattle’s success or need for improvements. This survey can be an important indicator that helps push more aggressive green building requirements in Seattle which I believe will make it a healthier and more sustainable city moving in to the future.
